Parent Resource Institute for Drug Education

Founded 30 years ago, PRIDE Youth Programs is the oldest and largest peer-to-peer organization devoted to drug abuse and violence prevention, through education. Started by two parents wanting to educate other parents on drug and alcohol issues their children faced, the organization has since developed to include over 4,000 youth from around the world who reach out to peers, younger students, and communities with a drug-free messageNot only do they encourage, PRIDE Youth Program members commit themselves to living a safe and drug-free lifestyle during their high school years. For three decades, PRIDE has been a leader in the drug prevention field with innovative programs that encourage youth to take the lead in drug and alcohol prevention.

Lake Erie PRIDE was established in the spring of 2003 after two high school freshman returned to Erie motivated, after attending the annual National PRIDE Conference as visitors. Gathering a group of kids together they began their own PRIDE Youth Team.  Those first meetings of 7 students has grown to include approximately 50 members from 9 local area high schools.  Lake Erie PRIDE has been recognized in the community by receiving the Mayoral Award of Excellence, as a two-time recipient of WJET T.V.'s Good Kid Award, as well as winning Positive Passions '05 through Erie's Healthy Youth Development Board. Also, Lake Erie PRIDE is recognized through drug-prevention performances developed, written, and performed by team members.

Lake Erie PRIDE is based upon PRIDE Youth Programs' four pillars:

Community Outreach: Each year, the members of Lake Erie PRIDE create a 40 minute performance for the target audience of 7th-12th graders. Since our beginning, LEP has reached approximately 18,000 youth in our community. The performance is dramatic and powerful, and it includes drama, dance, popular music, statistics, and the true stories of victims who lost their lives or been injured by careless drunk drivers. LEP performs for a different school each month.

Community Service: Lake Erie PRIDE volunteers at various events around the Erie community. These events include the American Red Cross' KidsFest, the Achievement Center's Trail of Treats, and the March of Dimes Walk. Also, the LEP team has spent time with senior citizens in assisted living homes.

Drug-free activities: Lake Erie PRIDE members enjoy kicking back and having fun together as well when they are not performing, meeting, or volunteering! LEP holds monthly socials at the movies, bowling, laser tag, and sled riding as well as Halloween and Christmas parties to name just a few!

Drug Education: Lake Erie PRIDE invites guests speakers from around the community to present at monthly meetings. By discussing a variety of topics, LEP members are educated on issues they feel need to be understood in promoting a healthy-lifestyle.
